The string "-fcp phalanx" tells xboard to use the engine named phalanx as the
First Chess Program (FCP). If you substitute gnuchess for phalanx (perhaps
/usr/games/gnuchess ? guessing here!) you should be good to go.

To find where gnuchess lives, try this command: which gnuchess
The output of that command (if gnuchess is in your search path) will be what you
place after the "-fcp" on that command line for xboard.
