I read all replies but this has not been answered. > >kburcham By restricting the download sites, the freeware author ensures that his program has not been tampered with, altered, hacked, had viruses / trojans inserted etc etc. He can sort of guarantee the authenticity of the code. (So long as his website is not hacked.)
