Just because a piece of software is offered by a site for free does not give
others the right to offer it for free.

Let's take an example of why this might be so. Let us say you decide to offer a
given piece of software for free for the purposes of getting people to visit
your site so that you can either gain advertising revenue or to induce visitors
to buy other things at your site. This is a perfectly legit business scheme that
would be clearly hurt if other sites decide to offer the same piece of software
for free. The law can and should protect you.
