one small example: i have written a checkers program which is available for
download on my webpage (www.fierz.ch/checkers.htm). i update it now and then, in
irregular intervals. unfortunately, some software archives have included it not
as a link but as a direct download sometime in the past. the result: some sites
offer very outdated versions of my program for download, which is a nuisance,
because people sometimes ask for help on something that is long fixed in newer
versions.

not that this is tragic, but i prefer that people just link to my site. so in
that respect i can understand frank. however, i do feel he is overreacting on
this whole business.

cheers
