Well I am not entirely sure.
The first thing is that with the ancient discharged battery connected the
display was quite a lot dimmer. That should not affect the display when it is
running from the adaptor but it does. I was surprised that later the battery
held some charge.
The second thing is that I detached the ribbon cable and examined the components
which may have nudged something back in place. BTW the ribbon cable can be a cow
to replace, I would not detach it again in haste.
Anyway at that point I got the display as bright as new.
