But I think there is a real issue: Crafty scaled incredibly well on the Quad Opteron last year. A complete unknown is a 8-way, 16 or even 32-way system. As an ignoramus I expected competitive programs to scale in a similar way, but I learned that this is not at all clear. Crafty's potential is probably its parallel search, a field the "professionals" maybe haven't worked that hard on yet. Crafty (most) probably can't compete successfully on PC hardware on equal grounds, when it is about matches against top professionals, but on the other hand it is not at all clear if Shredder or Fritz or the world champion will be competitive on something better than Quad Opteron next year. Let's wait and see :) Peter
