This is pretty much the same thing Peter said... but when I rewrote my move generator I introduced a few bugs that screwed up the perft counts. The way I tracked them down was to put in some extra trace statements that dumped the FEN of every position and each move it generated. Then simply ran the old move generator, saved the log, ran the new one, saved the log, and diffed them. Once you know the board position where you are missing a move or two it's easy to figure out the problem. Good luck, Scott
