Rumors are rife about a new stonger dedicated chess computer and I was just
thinking, do us dedicated fans really want a new dedicated chess computer that
is stronger than the Tasc or Genius? At first I thought of course we do, but do
we? After all any dedicated m/c playing at Tasc strength or higher will beat
most of us without even taxing its processor. And what would happen. We would
just end up playing these m/c’s against each other in much the same way as some
of us do with PC programs. While this is interesting up to a point (I do it
myself with dedicated units) wouldn’t it be better if we could perhaps expand
sideways with extra features instead of strength.
How about being able to purchase dedicated units not to increase strength but
play like a certain player. Maybe a Spasky or Fischer unit. Research into
opening books could be taken from games they played rather than the best
tournament positions. As well as giving all of us a good game of chess we could
still test old masters against each other. I think that getting dedicated units
to play in the style of old GMs rather than trying to match their strength would
be an exciting way to go.
I know some PC programs try to do this but it is more of a gimmick than a real
representation.
