I had the SAME problem. It has to do with the default font setting (True Type, Chess Meridia). This font does not seem to work. However, loading any other True Type chess font from the sites Arena team recommends works fine. One should note that even deletion and reinstallation of the Chess Meridia font downloaded from one of these web sites still does not work.
