That is simply not true - what often gets loss in the dirt  is that what Fischer
demanded was unlimited games, draws don't count , the first to get 10 wins the
world championship.  A 9-9 tie and Fischer retain the World Chamnpionship.  Fide
refused to meet this demand.

Later. after Karpov was awarded the title,  the Fide adopted the draws don't
count format when Karpov played Kasparov.   So ultimately, one can say Fischer
won the battle and lost the war.

The Fide was essentially umder Russian control back then and was almost as
corrupt as the current Fide is today.

A smoother operator would have compromised, but Fischer's uncompromising
personality trait which helped win the title was also his achille's heel in
forfeiting the title.  By the mid 70's , the Russians has him figured out and
knew this would be his undoing.
