A 9-9 tie and Fischer retain the World Chamnpionship. Fide refused to meet this demand. Later. after Karpov was awarded the title, the Fide adopted the draws don't count format when Karpov played Kasparov. So ultimately, one can say Fischer won the battle and lost the war. The Fide was essentially umder Russian control back then and was almost as corrupt as the current Fide is today. A smoother operator would have compromised, but Fischer's uncompromising personality trait which helped win the title was also his achille's heel in forfeiting the title. By the mid 70's , the Russians has him figured out and knew this would be his undoing.
