As you can see, the brainless wood counter beat the clever evaluation.
We still get several plies of additional depth by wood counting only. Beowulf
has a high branching factor (over 3) and so I expect that a program with a
better branching factor could reach astounding depths.
But then again, for non-tactical positions, the astounding depths return absurd
answers.
It is the deep non-tactical searches where the wood counter has no clue at all.
This is the opening position (wood counting only) for a depth of 22 plies and
the best the program can come up with is the unfathomably lame a4.
