Of course, I made no claim that every search will reach 19 plies. However, with
a modification of Null move to choose a more aggressive Heinz variable depth
scheme over Colin's more conservative (and somewhat stronger for Beowulf) scheme
-- it is easy to reach 19 plies in tactical positions in as little as 3 seconds.
However, it also becomes clear that the deeper the search goes the lower the
probability that it returns correct results. It should be obvious because when
there are no captures, a material only search is totally clueless.
Here is a 3 minute search of some tactical positions where the wood counter
version with an aggressive Heinz null move scheme can hit 19 plies (or nearly
so) with tactical positions:
