IMHO big watt stuff is only necesarry if you plan to use a big pile of hd's or
are building a dual processor machine.

I run 1 DVD drive + 2 HD's + the 100 watt consuming socket 758 AMD 3400+
(2.4Ghz) succsesfully on a 300 watt tower without problems.

If I remember well an average hd consumes 30 watt.

I always connect the monitor directly on power (not via the case).
