Go up one level in this thread
>So, what is the right maximum level of NVIDIA Geforce series for a new display >card? to play chess and "occasionally" watch a 3D game even a graphic chipset embedded in the motherboard is enough: the good ones ar nForce2 or nForce3 by nVidia, or IGP9100 by Radeon (here you add a few bucks or nothing to the cost of the mobo). In this case condisder the memory the card will use will be that of the system having none dedicated. Other entry level cards (< 100$) you have the 5200, 5500 or 5700SE by nVidia, and 9200/9250,9550 or X300 by Radeon. And I would go for 128 MB, you don't need 256 for sure. >From GeForce 256 (lowest end) through GeForce 6 series (highest end.) >For example, I consider GeForce 5 series such 5200, 5700 or 5800. I don't remeber the GeForce 256, but series 6 takes > 100$ for sure, so unless you play Doom or Half Life 2 or most recent drving games, you don't really need to spend so much. From 5200 to 5800 there is a huge dfirrence in price and performance, please understand really your needs first. For SOHO use (chess is similar in terms of requirements) a 5200 is more than enoguh. The only thing I would try to do is to avoid any "SE" (Standard Edition) or LE (Light Edition) models cause usually they have a 64 bit restricted bus, for in such case it is cheaper to get a build in video card with similar performances. >Also, what is size of memory that is enough for it, 500MB or 1GB? You mean total PC ram or video ram? Cause there are little cards with so much video ram and it does not make much sense. As Ram for the PC 512 MB to 1 GB is fine today and easely affordable: one could think 1 GB is good for the has tables, but I think that it is not really "necessary". >Is 80GB hard disk space more than enough? That could be little space, if you want to store tablebases having some extra sapce can help somtimes, and going from 80 to 200 GB does not cost so much today. >I do not want to waste money on unnecesssary high-end display card, expensive >memory chips and hard drive. Please help me. Good point. Then don't waste more than 50-70$ on a graphic card.
