I wanted to post a similar message. One of the 2 chess books, I have have read - Tarrasch, Das Schachspiel - does mention this rule. When I programmed endgames, I looked at it, and tested many positions. To me, the rule just did not look correct. In many "normal" cases, 2 pawns one file apart was enough. In many other cases two files apart was not enough to win. I could not easily detect a pattern. Can anybody give a better (more specific) rule? Simon Finn!? Robert Smith!? (Perhaps slightly wrong name, I remember him from giving interesting rules for endgames. But wasn't Robert Smith from The Cure?) With normal cases I mean cases without trivial wins, where the defending King is in reach of the panws, and the attacking side cannot easily force promotion (in say 5 plies search). Regards, Dieter
