it is very easy to understand
and this is always the example that is offered to defend PC chess programs
the flaw in this argument is very clear
humans were never the fastest living things
nor were they the strongest
many animals can run faster then humans and many creatures are far stronger

but humans were always the most intelligent creatures on earth
chess was always regarded as a game that indicates deep levels of intelligence
when played at a high level
now for $25 a PC chess program can play at near super GM strength and defeat all
but a very few humans
something is lost for the meaning and significance of chess now

perhaps chess should not have been viewed this way by the general public but it
was nonetheless
now it is not

chess will soon no longer be regarded with the same level of respect when played
by humans

as for me..i have no interest in Machine competition of any kind
wether it be racing cars or two chess programs
and knowing that two of the worlds best chess players(in a World Championship
match for example)are sitting there playing moves in deep thought, while a $25
chess program is showing every flawed move they make..takes away from the
interest and meaning of the match
this will only get worse as the silicon monster gets faster and faster

chess as we know know it is on its death knoll
