There is no deception in chess... no trickery... the pieces are all clearly in view. Yet, a better player can steamroll over a lesser opponent. I love chess, the game... but am not gifted at it. I have read many, many books on chess and played at chess clubs. Then, when dedicated chess computers became available I was spellbound even more. How did these things work? Why is one better than another? Can they beat humans? Will they ever beat the world champion? I learned to program so I could write a chess program. Programming became my career but the real passion was for chess programming. And there are probably many others in this category. We LOVE the game so much we want to see it played better than we can. Botvinnik is an obvious example of a truly great player who turned his hand to building a chess machine. I beg to differ that programmers have no love of the game. For me, it is precisely the love of the game that drives me on. On the other hand, we see the human administrative side of chess is filled with politics and acrimony. FIDE seems to care little for the game. Money and power seem to rule everything. The irony is that I see the _love_ of the game dying on the _human's_ side. Chess programmers will continue to take chess to the next level... and the next. Aren't you curious to see what chess looks like when played perhaps a 1000 Elo stronger than any human has ever achieved? :-) Fascinating stuff!
