Programs from the past do not beat the programs of today on equal hardware.
Clearly, there have been improvements in evaluation and search methods.
But you are right about the elite monsters on custom hardware. Their advantage
is mainly due to speed and to a lesser extent a sophisticated evaluation.

No, I was talking about the love of the game and the reason for this
programmer's involvement in chess. It contrasted nicely with the human side's
exploitation of the game. Well, I thought it was a great point. And half
expected you to capitulate your side of the argument. Oh well.... never mind.

No way! It will be chess from the gods.... lauded like correspondence chess
compared to OTB. :)

But seriously, there is truth in chess.
The truth will always remain... and neither man or machine is capable of
following the line of truth from beginning to end... we can only attempt to
approximate it.

And chess hides her truth well... well enough that the game will always hold our
interest... way way into the future.

Cheers!

Ross
