The problem is that the openings books can include inferior variations so in that case they can complicate things to the program, but in general they make the program stronger bringing it to the middle game in a better position or at least playable. The openings books are also what links the chess programs to the human players as they simulate those by playing the same variations and so they allows the owners to train themself playing those "human" variations. I knew this and I have been facing this situation in the recent match against Hydra as I realized our buggy program was unable to win a single game due to the resulted weakening.
