Dear readers, I just received my copy of Junior 9 today, which I will review at ChessCafe.com, as I did earlier with Shredder. Given my excitement, I've not yet read the "read me" file or viewed Amir's media file (I will tonight, though). But given that the engine is marketed as having a "special strength in its understanding of compensation." I take that to mean that it comprehends when a material deficit is compensated for by active play. If my understanding is correct, then I have an ideal position in mind from one of my correspondence games, given that both sides frequently offered exchange sacrifices, most of which were declined. So I quickly tested that game by playing through a few moves with Junior. During this, Junior 9 locked up on my screen and generated a message stating "Junior 9 caused an exception." This happen 3-times in about 30-minutes of testing. What does that mean? Is this an engine problem, a GUI problem, or a hardware (e.g. memory) problem? How does one resolve this problem. Obviously, in my haste, I've yet to download the latest CB GUI, but have read complaints about it. Yet, others seem happy with J9.0.0.2. What is the latest verdict on J9's CB upgrade? All the best, Stephen
