This is one of the reasons I have a USB mini drive. :-) I just took a networking class in school. Can you roll-back the network driver to an older one? Did you uninstall all of your drivers and restart before installing the real drivers? It does sound like your network card could be dead. The good thing is they are cheap. I like to buy them online for a couple dollars apiece when they are on sale.
