Worse for Linux users than for Mac users. How many professional chess programs are there for Linux? I don't know of any. The amateur programs probably have a single platform to develop on most of the time. They are not going to spend a few thousand dollars on another machine and software to develop on another platform unless they already have that stuff. I think Will Singleton has both platforms, but most amateur programmers won't have that. The open source programs can be ported anywhere you like, if you want to expend the effort. Some links you might like: http://www.sigmachess.com/ http://members.aol.com/Macchess/ http://directory.google.com/Top/Games/Video_Games/Recreation/Board_Games/Chess/Macintosh/ http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/pub/info-mac/game/brd/ http://www.ekimsw.com/chessworks/ http://www.schubert-it.de/ I am guessing Hiarcs Mac is the strongest. Just a wild guess, though.
