Thanks!

Understand. But in some positions (perhaps certain pawn structures, endgames or
passed pawn situations) I think Crafty may be more knowledgeable than most
engines about what to do.

I understand your point, and I have thought a lot about it. :)

Another Shredder 7.04 observation:

With Shredder 7.04 game analysis, in some opening positions (relatively closed I
think) the eval score (even when given 512MB HT and minimum of 6 minutes, or up
to 15 minutes per move) jumps up and down a lot between successive Black & White
moves, even when the recommended move was played.

This occurs under the Fritz 6 GUI, and the Shredder 7 Chessbase and Shredder 7
Classic GUIs. So it appears to not be the problem of a single GUI, but likely
an Engine 'problem'.

I guess this is possibly due to:

1) Heavy pruning, that *may* for some reason be different depending on whether
it is White or Black to move;

2) Giving a variable but relatively large (sometimes 'huge') bonus for having
the right to move, perhaps to reflect a normally always present potential
'initiative' stemming from the right to make the next move.

I hope the S9 PVs have fewer clinkers!

I do, normally 512MB (prefered) of my 1GB RAM.
