I recently installed J9 using Kurt’s suggested method which resulted in de-installing the J9 GUI, but at the same time updating to the J9 - 9.0.0.2 engine. That update, at least I think it was that update, resulted in giving you an option to run the J9 or deep J9 GUI under the options–> version window. I just logged on the playchess server after selecting the J9 version as the GUI to run, although I have been using S8 - whether that is even necessary is problematic, but did it in any event. Playchess did not tell me that they had a new version of the GUI - they NEVER identify what the update is, just tell you they have one - as they typically do if there is a new upgrade. I queried update in the drop down help file. It said I had version 24 and that they had a version 24 as an update. Odd, as usually the update version number, in my experience, has been a higher number. I checked the box to update. It was downloaded, the standard gui8.iup file that requires the IUPgrade.exe file to run, both files usually in the program files -> chessbase -> chessProgram8 folder. I then followed the usual update procedure. In the engine folder I now have a new J9 engine, dated Jan 5, 2005, 282,624 bytes in size, with version # of 9.0.0.3. The J9 .dll file remains with the Nov 16, 2004 date. I changed the GUI version back to S8, closed the program, re-opened it and tried to load the new J9 engine. It asked for the J9 CD which I gave it. Then I did some infinite analysis on a middle game position with the new engine. All seems OK, analyzing ~ 1800kn/s as the prior version did on my AMD 3000+ machine, 192MB hash, 768MB RAM. J9 is certainly very fast. Chris
