It was written in the 'C' language (90% of chess programmes are written in
it)and you would need a 'c' compiler.

here is a link to learn about C, they would presumably all explain the symbols
and signs.

however it might be worth while to see how a tic-tac-toe program works first
with the concept of a recursive search

there may be one or 2 programs available for chess written in visual basic.
sometimes beginners prefer vb as a first language
