I've now done quite a bit of testing, including several repairs and reinstallations of the 3 different release versions of the gui8 (original Dec'03 version on the CD, Apr'04 update, Jan'05 update) and reinstallation of some of the special fonts, while testing font selections in the gui. It's clear that only the original GUI from Dec'03 works correctly with font selections. The "updates" introduce a bug with font selection. To be more specific, the bug is related to selection of three fonts in the "extra book pane": FigurineCB AriesSP, FigurineCB LetterSP, FigurineCB TimeSP. The default with the original Dec'03 gui8 is FigurineCB AriesSP, and it can be changed to something different, then be changed back to FigurineCB AriesSP OK in that gui version. Not so with the two "update" gui versions... If you try to change to something else, then change back to FigurineCB AriesSP, you get Arial instead! Similarly if you try to select FigurineCB LetterSP, you get Courier New instead! And if you try to switch to FigurineCB TimeSP, you end up with Times New Roman! You can NOT change to the Figurine CB fonts with the two gui8 updates. Other font selections work OK, but not those in the "extra book pane". The last gui8 version from Jan'05 is somewhat more screwed up fontwise than the prior two versions. Fonts do not display exactly right, in general. It's definitely different from the prior versions, and there seems to be no way to fix it by selecting fonts. It does what it wants to do! This applies particularly to the dialog box that appears when you replace a game in a database (Ctrl-R). The font used therein is different. There's also some kind of font difference in the engine pane, especially the little boxlet that displays the running time. The bug seems related to "pitch" of the fonts, and the letters are spaced too far apart. These bugs are not really "serious", just cosmetics... ...but I happened to notice them because I customize my gui highly with different font sizes and selections. For example I've never found anything better than the special Chessmaster6000 font for certain things such as the game score in the Notation pane. I've kept that font for a long time and use it in a lot of my applications, because it's a very nice bold & easily legible font. I'm not noticing much else different in the Jan'05 gui8 update, only slight changes here and there. If it fixes any bugs, I'm unaware of it. It certainly introduces some new ones related to fonts. WP
