In simple terms, a DVD drive is a huge CD drive that is backward compatible with
your CDs. You cannot go wrong by configuring your system to have one (usually a
pretty inexpensive option). Imaging the convenience of an LP vs a bunch of
single 45 records (remember those?).

You might not need one now, but think of how convenient it will be to have
multi-cd games, encyclopedias and such on ONE DVD rather than the hassle of
swapping, storing, and keeping track of multiple CDs. You can have the whole
enclyclopedia AND dictionary, thesaurus, and hours of multimedia all on one
disk. For chess software, I can't wait until the Thompson end-game CD set is
offered on one DVD and maybe even expanded!

A bonus is that you can play DVD movies on your computer!
