When it is about Bruce I thought that his webpages could be a good starting point for you though, especially his stuff on min-max and alpha-beta, and considered to give a link. His picture is simplified because it's static, but you should really try to understand it at first, because that's a basic scheme all major programs use, and it is different from looking up things already played in a database or the like. Actually Bruce also managed to program one of the world's best chessprograms and won a few world championships with it, just thought you might like to know :).
