Why limit yourself to HIARCS or MChess? Both are great programs, and both are Dos. Here is a quick rundown of the one's I'm famailer with, as far as I can remember them. 1st, the windows programs... 1. Fritz5.32 A chess base playing program/interface with 10 chess engines and many, many extras, including a 300,000+ game database. around $50 bucks! 2. Junior5 World Micro Champion, 1997. Uses virtually the same interface as Fritz5 3. Chessmaster 6000. A fantastic widely available program, with many tutorials and voice annotated game by Josh Waitzkin. Excellent (well enjoyable, anyway), rate your game feature. Chess engine by Johann de Konig. Finds the Shirov mate (discussed here in the CCC), in 2 seconds! (Fritz 5.32 takes 19). About $35 dollars 4. TASC, Chessica. A playing program based on Fritz3 (Programmer, Franz Morsh), Comes with an excellent 5 volume Tutor all the one CD. About $78 dollars. 5. Millenium Genius6. Has a beautiful interface, and also like Fritz5, a chess tree. 450,000 games. About $119 dollars Dos programs. 6. HIARCS 7 Has excellent positonal play, for a program with a fairly low node count. Really has surprised the experts that way. Still over $100 dollars? 7. TASC Database. A chess database that includes the playing program, The King, by Johan de Konig. engine is very simular to CM6000, above. I tested it on that same mate - found just as quickly. A nice combination, especially if you want to use the databases from CM6000 as well. 8. MChess7 (8?) A very aggressive program, by Marty Hersch, who used to work for NASA, but it won't get you to the moon:) Inexpensive, about $50 dollars. I like the opening book, especially if your interest in the Najdorf or the Intalian game. 9. Rebel10 Feature rich, large database included, with a human like style, and Anti-GM feature. Also has an inovative tree feature that can intergrate with its excellent provided opening book. This is the program to choose, if your happy with dos, but would like to upgrade to Windows later. (The 1st Windows beta of this program will be free to registured users). Inexpensive - About $70 dollars. All of these programs are incredibly strong, have a lot of features, that meet your requested desires, and depending on who you talk to, are the best! That's why I have them all, except for the current versions of HIARCS & MChess. And if money (& HD space), were no problem, I'd have them too! mrslug - the inkompetent chess software addict!
