Good read.

I've used all three servers and USCL. I've even been a short-time paying member
to the three that cost money. I think FICS is a better choice than it appears
reading your review. Free is free, and I have played 1200+ games on FICS in the
last year with very few problems from cheating.

Yes, some players -- and admins -- are immature and sometimes rude on FICS. The
language allowed on the server is also not up to my standards. Does ICC and
Playchess protect the chat on main channels?

I don't like the chessbase interface at all. Even if it were bugless, the
design does not appeal to me. Blitzn is apparently full of spyware and
background processes that monitor your usage of chess programs while on the
server. It doesn't sound overly pleasant to me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but
playchess and ICC only allow one free choice for a GUI? This is a major con! I
could talk on and on about how much I like babaschess but I won't. :)

If asked by friends who are learning chess, my recommendation is to start with
FICS, and babas. :)
