On the basis of games I have seen so far, my guess is that Hiarcs 9.6 is about 30-40 ELO stronger than 9.0 I am currently playing a match: Hiarcs 9.6 on 1.25GHz G4 eMac v Gandalf 6 on 1.6GHz Centrino On comparing the nps on the G4 and the Centrino for Hiarcs, Deep Sjeng, Ruffian-2 and Fruit-2 I reckon the Centrino is on average about 2.4x faster than the G4 for chess calculation. This gives Gandalf a rating boost (conservatively) of 40 ELO by playing on the faster machine. Despite this, Hiarcs 9 is currently winning: Program Score % Av.Op. Elo + - Draws 1 Hiarcs : 19.0/ 35 54.3 2585 2615 117 82 40.0 % 2 Gandalf : 16.0/ 35 45.7 2615 2585 82 117 40.0 % If you go by the CSS Rating list http://www.computerschach.de/magazin/rangliste_english/ this would give Hiarcs 9.6 a rating around 2725 (note that H9.0 LOST its individual match v Gandalf on equal hardware in that rating list) Hiarcs stunning performances against Ruffian and Deep Sjeng on the Mac are in the same ballpark, or better - I think a guess of CSS 2725 is fairly conservative. On SSDF rating list Gandalf and Hiarcs are about equal on equal hardware, so here the results would suggest a leap of >50 points - but SSDF are classic chess games not blitz, Hiarcs is a better blitzer than classic engine, and I have been measuring mostly blitz performance. I know that this is all speculation, the number of games are still few, and error bars are large, but it is fun to speculate, and life is short!
