I do not think that there is any connection between making a computer play like
a human and learning how humans think.  Suppose that we made a program play
exactly like Garry Kasparov.  Each and every time the compter moved Garry would
exclaim, "That's what *I* was thinking!"  -- Would you imagine that somehow we
have learned how humans think from that?  I am very sure that we would not learn
how humans think by that method because the model of a CPU with a large single
memory store and a stored program is not at all the model of a human brain.  If
we want to learn how humans think, first we must understand how the brain works.

That is not true.  They consider space on the board.  They consider development
of pieces.  They hunt for forks and pins.  They know all about the things we
like.

Have you ever played Golem under Winboard or Arena?
It plays like my little sister did when she was 10 years old.
Complete with mistakes and an occasional very good move.
I call that very much like a human.

I recommend Arena for new users, because it is trivial to set it up:
