I thought I'd ask if others were experiencing the same problems as I have. MAIN PROBLEM: I believe this dates back to the Fritz 6 family GUIs, but I could be wrong. Nevertheless, when running tournaments with web updates (where Fritz will send FTP updates to with current game data and a crosstable) the GUI often pauses (or hangs) during the FTP update. SIDE-EFFECT #1: If you have the updates set to every 5 minutes, I've seen it pause while updating, long enough to cause the one of the engines to flag in the current game (whoever's turn it was when the update began.) This seems to only happen during blitz tournaments. SIDE-EFFECT #2: Often, it pauses long enough that Windows tags it with the "(Not Responding)" identifier and hands it over to "hungapp." In this case, the computer is not locked-up, but the entire CB GUI is. On very few occasions it has recovered after leaving it alone for 5-15 minutes, but not often. Usually you have to force-quit the application and re-start the tournament. Of course, with web updates turned completely off, there are no problems... An interesting side note is that if you choose the option to update after "every game" instead of a set time interval, it will only follow your directions for the first game of the tournament and then continues with 5 minute updates. I normally wouldn't post something like this because I'd just assume it was a problem on my end. However, I've had this problem with EVERY computer I've installed Fritz on. Some acting worse than others, but all experiencing at least one of those two side-effects listed above. Additionally, I've noticed that when you first open the GUI and a game is played (either local or on www.playchess.com) the entire computer pauses for quite sometime -- I assume to update book learning, but it often happens for 30 seconds or more. Not a huge deal, but a little strange... Thank you for any comments or help. I'm at a loss after testing this on more than seven different computers over the last four years or so (between F6 and F8 GUIs..) Regards, -elc.
