In my own personal experience, the problem comes from the age old "don't sit too
close to the TV or you'll go blind!" warning that your parents always used to
tell you. The simple fact that the computer monitor is only a couple of feet
away from you puts more strain on your eye muscles than if it were a more
reasonable (TV viewing) distance of about 6-10 feet.

So, if your problem is that your eyes (and, in particular, your eye MUSCLES) are
getting tired, then there's not much you can do about it except not spend as
much time at your computer (or, at the very least, take FREQUENT breaks). If the
problem is that you are squinting or having trouble seeing what's on the
monitor, then you should get as big a monitor as possible, preferably a
flat-panel plasma, and pick a resolution that is comfortable for you.

But, to answer your question in a sideways monitor, it's not really the monitor
that is causing the problem. It's your "long time use" that you refer to.
