Helpmate is a stipulation that occurs with "chess problems", so it has not much to do with normal chess playing. When the "chess problem" asks for a "helpmate" the solver (you) are asked to construct a mate position with _any_ series of moves by black and white (according to the rules, of course). Black is not defending, i.e. black does not try to avoid the mate, but rathers _helps_ the white side to accomplish the mate. Since it is a kind of "puzzle", there is no world champion ;-) Cheers, Heiner
