It is an almost impossible task for an individual to run the necessary tests to prove with a high degree of confidence that an engine is slightly better/worse than another, or that the same engine with different settings is better/worse. Only a large independent group like SSDF has much chance of success. We could look to the engine's author for advice, but they seldom make any public suggestions insofar as I'm aware. At least I haven't heard any recommendations from the Shredder 8 author about different parameter settings. Presumably he thinks the defaults are optimum, but there might be better settings for different playing conditions such as long periods of analysis in infinite mode. Also we cannot look to the operating instructions for advice, because there is NO specific description on the Shredder 8 engine parameters on the Shredder 8 CD from Chessbase!? The last set of description of the parameters, of which I'm aware, came on the Shredder 7 CD associated with the Classic GUI (not the Fritz GUI from Chessbase). WP
