Guessing you have a 56k modem.. and if your speed is that low, it's not a great sign. When I have had problems like this in the past it was because of old/faulty wiring (I live in a 70+ year home). Perhaps have a line test on your phone lines. It could be old wiring, a lot of bends in the wire, line noise, a lot of things. Also check with your inet provider... I haven't used dialup in a while, but remember back in the day they had seperate #'s to call if you where a 56kbit user vs 33.6 or lower (56kbit is different from the others since the ISP has to have a digital line from the hub to their complex for it to work.. part of the specs) While it can be a number of things, I would say faulty wiring is more than likely 99% the culprit. You can buy line testers at radio shack for a couple bucks, but I'm figure your phone company would do it for free and be more accurate. Hope that helps a bit. Sincerely, Joshua Shriver P.S. By chance if it is faulty or old wiring, it's not that expensive to fix. I literally went to Walmart bought a spool of phone wire, connected it to the box, around the ceiling of my basement, and drilled a hole in the floor to my room, then pulled the wire up, connected it to a phone jack, screwed it in.. voila new wiring. Probably cost less than $10 for the wire and the outlet. Also in respect to software that can speed things up... there are thinks like that, though I haven't tested it. I think it also has to be setup on the ISP side... things like AOL,etc which claim to have faster service.. I believe it's done because when a request is sent out... the ISP gathers it.. compresses it on the fly, sends it to you, and your puter uncompresses the data. I'm not claiming to be 100% accurate here, just what I've read elsewhere. Might work with other ISP's etc... best guess google for it, and try them out. If it works, more power to you.
