The program was "Kasparov's Gambit." It was simply an outstanding program (IMHO), very cool and fun with nice graphics. In the right corner of the screen was the face of Kasparov himself, who would act as coach and critic, offering humorous and helpful commentary. The program had numerous personalities, making it possible for almost anyone to beat the program. However, when the program ran at full strength, the Socrates engine was VERY hard to beat. I, for one, could neither beat nor even draw against the program (running on a 486 DX100). I still have that program; it runs most reliably under "true" DOS. I still play the program from time to time. I always choose an easy personality such as "Neanderthal" so I can hear Garry applaud my performance!
