Fritz 8 was the second generation of changes that were made to take it from somewhat of a "bean-counter" to slightly slower but more knowledgeable search with improved positional understanding. There's more to chess engines than just their strength vs. one another -- but this is something the "ELO Monkeys" will never comprehend. -elc.
