The nodes / sec is not a good estimator of strength. I think Goliath has the highest nodes / sec but, while it is a good engine, it's certainly nowhere near the best. What is more important is: #1 the search techniques (i.e. which moves are searched / extended and which are prunned) and #2 the evaluation of a position. Shredder 8 has a fantastic search and brilliant evaluation!! As for tactical ability this also has nothing to do with nodes / sec. A good example is The King / Chessmaster that has one of the lowest nodes / sec but is a wonderful tactician. Also Shredder 8 is one of the best tacticians - I know some people think that this is Shredder's weak spot but they're wrong - maybe Shredder 4 was not so good at tactics but Shredder 8 is up with the best!
