This is what I have been doing over the last couple of months. I too had a lot of ply 1 (and 3) bonuses, which I took out after your question in this group a few months ago. I just clear the TTs when I enter the endgame and after either side castles. 2) New pawn scoring, which is specifically intended to stop the sort of thing you describe above.
