The 1997 CCR Chess Software Awards lists Hiarcs 6 and Genius 5 as the best endgame programs. The LCT II test has Genius 4.0 clearly ahead of the other programs with a score of 67% on a PP200 with 16 MB RAM. It seems that the Genius programs have more endgame knowledge, with or without 4-piece endgame databases. Of course, the real test would involve actual games against humans under tournament conditions. Unfortunately, I've never seen any statistics about endgame results in human-computer tournaments.
