Interesting view, and to an extent I agree.... one of my problems with chess
comp's... is that they tend not to judge *just* by code as I would wish... but
by hardware. So like so many games.... he with the biggest pockets has the
advantage.. which in my view is unfair.

Take a guy who is broke, but spends his life coding a perfect chess engine... he
might lose to an undergrad, who has MS on his side pumping a $1million worth of
hardware on his side... which is better?

In terms of the WCCC it seems the undergrad wins... but I see (at least assume)
with your results... you're truly testing engines based on their strength and
not on hardware.

(BTW the only flaw I see in this.... is cases where engines are tuned for 64 bit
hense Opteron,etc... and SMP engines)... so I must admit you're view isn't
perfect. Thought it seems a lot more fair that most competitions.

I hope once my engine is done, you can add it to your list... I dont mind
getting creamed by such masters as Crafty, Diep, Sjeng, Fritz, or Junior... :)
but would like an honest view of how it all ends up.

Sincerely,
Joshua Shriver

P.S. I guess I shouldn't complain.... I was lucky enough to get into this game,
at the point where parallelization is the real key to winning. Since I have a
sponcer willing to donate me all the time I want on a 50 node (dual Opteron)
cluster... *hense I have 100 Opterons* at my disposal all connected via
Myrnet... I am truly greatful and blessed... so if finance blesses me I hope
to enter the 2005 WCCC...

but bottom line... will I consider my *CODE* better than Crafty? Diep?...
honestly I seriously doubt it....

If by chance I beat either.... I will seriously withdrawal my title.. and use
that a proof that hardware and $$ plays a more crutial role.

BTW I'm not saying this to rain on anyone's parade..... CODE + HW == best Chess
"MACHINE":... however I dont think comp's should be against best "machine" but
rather best engine... since when you count hardware into the design... you're
really factoring in an unfair advantage to whomever has the deepest pockets.
