Why does it seem all major chess comps... are held ONLY on ICC? I dont have an account, so I can't guess on their service. However I've been a FICS users for years... If people wanted to get a good comp set, where $$ wasn't an issue, then why not FICS? Then everyone from top of the line commercial users, down to the college guy like me who does this as a hobby could compete freely. Not only would the connection be free... but anyone who wanted to VIEW the comp could do so... even with a guest account since FICS uses a pretty plain protocol... read that as... anyone with ANY xboard/winboard could view. I for one, being on Linux and OS X, can't even use the "guest" account on ICC for viewing CCT7 because their software is proprietary, and the GUEST account requires using only their wintel client. Sincerely, Joshua Shriver P.S. I'm not trying to start a flame war... I'm just voting for more "real" chess comp's to be held in a more free space. If ICC didn't require their wintel only client to even view or participate I wouldn't care.. I'd just suck it up, load xboard and view... but right now I cant... so $$ is an issue. So politically speaking.. I can't be the only one... If anyone whether poor or rich could participate or even just VIEW... I think that is the best route to go. Again... just my $0.02
