Well, all of chess is just playing around! I have considered non-traditional
pieces such generalized knights which jump (x,y) instead of (2,1) and pieces
which combine the movements of bishop and knight or rook and knight (used, for
example, in Gothic chess.) I have looked at square boards from 4x4 to 80x80, as
well as some 3-d and circular boards. Looking at different board sizes, even
with traditional chess pieces, has in some cases led to better understanding of
winning methods. Also, small boards run faster and are useful for debugging
purposes.

The metric stuff was mainly to look at the effect of the 50-move rule.
