I too think that this is nothing but a convenient excuse. I run commercial programs (mainly Shredder8) on ICC, and having played Crafty and many other strong amateur programs, I realized early on that the commercial programs probably wouldn't show up. The amateur programs are just too strong. Gone are the days when they were no serious competition. In a short tournament like this, a strong amateur program has the chance to win several games....and there is no guarantee that the strongest program overall is going to win the tournament. The question is, what would a commercial program have to gain by entering the tournament? I'm a afraid the answer is very little, or even nothing. If it wins, people will say "big deal, it was playing amateurs", but if it loses...well, that could hurt sales. Peter, don't believe for a moment that the reason they're not playing is anything, but that they're afraid.
