I don't disagree with Gian, but it is simply not for me. Here is dual 242
Opteron for about $2200 with no operating system.

http://www.jncs.com/static-temp/workstations-opteron.php

At almost 2x the cost, this will run Crafty at about the same speed as the set
up I purchased. Run this setup in 64 bit mode and it will be 50% faster than my
Dual 3.0 Ghz setup. But requires me to get a 64 bit operating system and 64 bit
compiling tools ( for me to do my thing which is to tinker with code). So for
me, it is a combination of effort, time, OS , $$ and how I want to spend my free
time when I'm not working that led me to stick with what I am comfortable with.
It is simply a personal choice which we all make everyday of the week.

best,

Michael

ps Also, I would rather use the extra $1200 towards a purchase of a Tasc R30.
