First, to quote from my moderation philosophy that will soon be posted:

------------
(In my past experience as a moderator) I found that off-topic posts are
typically not a problem, and usually provided the occasional welcome distraction
from the main purpose of this board. I would be hard-pressed to remove an
off-topic post if it was inoffensive.
------------

To elaborate, I usually enjoy the occasional off-topic post, because these are
typically humorous sidebars.

But if I received a reasonable complaint about an OT post, I would obviously
treat it with respect and try to understand the nature of the complaint. If I
felt that the complaint had merit, I would (assuming that after discussion with
the other moderators it made sense to do so) ask the initial poster of the
thread to refrain from making any further posts about the same topic.

The job of a moderator is not only to make judgments about certain questionable
issues, but also to stand up for the members of this board. Even if only one
member found a post objectionable or offensive, that member's opinion needs to
be respected.
