If he had no experience then I'd agree with you. It wouldn't be worth it time
wise. That's why I started off asking if he did have experience, that way he
might  try a 64bit distro and probably have the system up and running within an
hour.

Bottom line is I hope he get's the box up running soon and hopefully get to test
the engine a bit before the tournament begins.
