I ran a 32 bit Crafty on it -- my impression is that 32 Bit programs on opterons
are slower on x64 than on xp. Not 100% sure , since I have never had the 32
bit os installed on the opterons. It maybe because when running 32-bit
applications, the software do have to be converted through an emulation layer
(of sorts) called Windows On Windows 64 (or, WoW64). Reportedly tests have shown
that WoW 64 does not affect application performance in any significant way, but
32 bit Crafty looked slower to me than I would have guessed. I will will retest
before I post the results because it may have been before I cranked up the FSB
to 229 Mhz.
